Frequently Asked Questions
- Why should I go to O'Brien's Rogue River Outfitters (O.R.R.O.) Rafting Camp?
-
This is the only Raft Camp in the area that offers a 4:1 ratio of adults to campers, campfire cooking, kayaking, rafting and hiking all in a very safe and yet adventurous way! Your teen will explore the nearby wilderness by paddling and by foot and make lifelong friends. We offer an educational experience that can't be synthesized in the classroom and yet every experience your teen encounters will enrich educational pursuits for a lifetime. We have over 26 years of whitewater guiding experience, and a combined total of 27 years teaching experience. We run our Raft Camp in the most beautiful natural settings that Oregon has to offer. Our safety record is excellent. Our guides are friendly, skilled professionals. We use only the best, professional quality rafting/kayaking and camping equipment. It is truly a mind, body and soulful experience!
- How safe are your trips?
-
O.R.R.O.'s safety record is excellent. That's because your teen's safety is our number one priority. Running a Raft Camp, like any other outdoor activities, involves an element of risk. We work hard to protect your child's safety and well being. Our guides are trained in outdoor safety and first aid skills. Each trip begins with a thorough safety orientation. Coast Guard Approved life jackets are worn at all times while on the river or lakes, and complete first aid and emergency kits are carried on each trip.
- What is the age group for your camp?
- Teens ages 14 - 16.
- When should I make a reservation?
-
Our Raft Camp fills up quickly. It is always best to make reservations as soon as possible, however even during the height of our season some space may remain or become available on certain trips. We encourage you to contact us about the trip of your choice.
- My teen has never been wilderness camping. Is that okay?
-
No problem, we'll spend the first few days of the camp session reviewing the basic safety, kayaking and camping skills your teen will need. All activities are conducted under the direct supervision of our guides and questions are always welcome.
- What about camping?
- The Raft Camps are in improved campgrounds in the National Forest or at County Parks. There are toilet and shower facilities in the campgrounds. We provide the tents and sleeping pads.
- What about bugs and mosquitoes?
- The Rogue River moves along quick enough (average 3 mph) that mosquitoes are not a problem on the raft trip, nor are other bugs. You may want to bring along repellant for the camp at night. We rarely see snakes and they avoid us too. If there is a particular bug that worries you, let us know and we will teach you how to stay away from them.
- My teen can't swim. Is it safe to go kayaking and rafting?
-
Everyone at Raft Camp wears a coast guard approved life jacket also commonly called a PFD or personal floatation device. This keeps swimmers afloat in the lake and river including rapids. Many non-swimmers go on rafting and kayaking trips and they have a great time. It is more important that your teen is not afraid of the water.
- Lifejackets (PFD's)
-
Our sturdy America's Cup lifejackets offer our rafting/kayaking campers the highest flotation available. They are fully adjustable to provide a comfortable and secure fit.
- Do most campers come to Raft Camp with friends?
-
Generally, no. Your teen will make many new friends at O.R.R.O.
- How will I be contacted if my child becomes ill or injured?
-
We will contact you by the telephone number(s) you have listed on the enrollment form.
- Will my child still be able to take his/her medication?
-
Yes. On the enrollment form it asks for any medications and dosages. Our guides will make sure that your child receives their medication, per instructions.
- Can my teen bring a walk-man or Gameboy or cell phone to camp?
-
No. Cell-phones are unnecessary and distracting. We make our own entertainment at O.R.R.O. Your child will be engaged in so many new, educational and exciting activities they won't even miss the electronics left at home.
- Can my teen bring a camera?
- Yes bring along the camera and take as many pictures as you want. We'll even snap a few for you upon request. We offer dry boxes to store your cameras in during the rapids and water fights. However, we can not be responsible for damaged or lost equipment so bring your favorite camera gear along at your own risk.
- How does your staff handle teens who have never been away from home?
-
Camp is a very exciting experience, especially the first time campers attend. Those who have never been away from home generally have no trouble adjusting. They love you and they miss you, but their days will be packed with fun, new activities and people, which they usually dive right into. Our staff is dedicated towards making camp as enjoyable as possible for every teen. In the rare occasion of homesickness, our guides will help campers find a way to cope with it and to continue enjoying their camp experience.
